Ways to take part: role quick guides

Planning phase. An independent plan; nothing is funded or built yet.

Our long-term aim: a future where money matters much less, and people and their shared work count most. It's an aim, not a promise: no role is open yet, and none brings pay, a job or a guarantee. When roles open, you'll join through Project OS: one profile for every project, with stats for each.

How it works, like a game

  • Quests: each with a clear goal, like "check three docks at a park hub". Training unlocks roles.
  • Rewards: badges, titles, recognition and first pick of new quests. Team goals count too.
  • Leaderboards: seasonal and opt-in. Hours and risk-taking are never scored; safety is never a challenge.
  • Limits: nobody does more than 10 hours a day across all projects, plus up to 2 bonus hours a week; lower legal or employer limits win.

More in the full plan.

Roles for anyone: 10-minute guide, shifts up to 2 hours

Station ambassador

Greet riders at launch events and show how to unlock, ride and return a bike. Under-18s need a guardian's OK.

  • Safety: stay on the sidewalk, wear the event vest, and never ride in traffic to show how.
  • Done: every question answered or logged.
  • Ask: the event lead. Badge: Welcome Guide.

Station check and tidy

Wipe screens and seats, sort recycling and compost, and report damage with a photo.

  • Safety: look and report only. Never open a dock, cabinet or battery, or touch a swollen or damaged one: step back and report it.
  • Done: checklist complete at each station.
  • Ask: the station lead. Badge: Station Keeper.

Path and access check

Walk a station's route and note what blocks an accessible path: steps, gaps, missing curb ramps. Especially welcome: people using wheelchairs, walkers or strollers.

  • Safety: daylight only, off the road, with a partner.
  • Done: a short photo report per route.
  • Ask: the access lead. Badge: Pathfinder.

Trained roles: adults, short course, shifts up to 2 hours

Ride leader

Lead slow group rides on park paths and quiet streets. Course: ride leading and basic first aid.

  • Safety: helmet on, set route, sweep rider at the back, no rides in storms or after dark.
  • Done: everyone back at the station, ride log filled in.
  • Ask: the rides lead. Badge: Trail Guide, after the course.

Skate-gear locker helper

Check and clean the lending locker's boards, skates, helmets and pads. Course: gear inspection and cleaning.

  • Safety: gloves on. Retire any helmet that has taken a hit.
  • Done: every item cleaned, checked and logged.
  • Ask: the locker lead. Badge: Gear Guardian.

Community chat helper

Welcome people in the Project OS e-bike chat and flag posts that break the code of conduct. Course: moderation and privacy.

  • Safety: never share personal details or message minors privately. Hand anything serious to a staff moderator.
  • Done: queue clear, flagged posts handed off.
  • Ask: the staff moderator. Badge: Good Neighbor.

Qualified roles: licensed or certified crews

Electrical, battery, construction and other safety-critical work is done only by qualified, insured crews: never by volunteers, never as a challenge.

Licensed electrician

Licensed electricians install and maintain station wiring, chargers and grid connections, under permit and inspection, to the electrical code and the utility's rules. Ask the build lead.

Battery and solar technician

Certified technicians install and service solar canopies and battery storage to fire and electrical codes for lithium-ion storage. They handle damaged batteries, which go to a certified recycler. Ask the build lead.

Fleet technician

Certified technicians repair bikes and e-scooters and check their batteries in a ventilated, fire-code workshop with battery fire equipment. E-scooters only where state and local rules allow; may start later. Ask the fleet lead.

Rebalancing driver

Licensed drivers with a clean record move bikes between stations in an electric cargo van, following traffic law, loading procedures and the allowed driving hours. Ask the operations lead.
